FOUND AT THE MARKET · THE THURSDAY DISPATCH

Three questions.
One useful answer.

Hello friends,

This is a good weekend to stay curious. Brownwood has airplanes, a wonderfully seasonal musical, and an evening tasting festival on the calendar. The serious treasure hunt is in Abilene, where an estate auction promises Fenton glass, old books, and plenty to inspect before raising a paddle.

Closer to home, downtown improvements have reached the bidding stage, a new fitness court has funding approval, and the animal shelter’s next chapter is still being worked out. Here’s what deserves a place on your calendar, your hunting list, and your radar.

GO · Brownwood Fly-In Fair

01 / GO · BROWNWOOD + WORTHWHILE DRIVES

What’s worth doing?

A weekend at the airport

Brownwood Fly-In Fair · October 24–25
Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. · Sunday 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Brownwood Regional Airport · 6251 Airport Road
$5 per vehicle · Cash only

Aircraft, classic cars, vintage displays, makers, artists, and food vendors make this the strongest local GO + SHOP crossover this weekend. Bring the family, leave room to browse, and keep a little cash handy.

Three more good reasons to go out

Little Shop of Horrors · October 23–25
Brownwood Lyric Theatre · 318 Center Avenue
Friday 7:30 p.m.; Saturday 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday 2:30 p.m. A local production with just the right October energy. Schedule and tickets →

Corks & Caps · Saturday, October 24 · 6–11 p.m.
Brownwood Event Center · 601 East Baker Street
Regional beverage producers, food vendors, Zak Webb, and Mason & The Mercenaries. Ticketed. Use the organizer’s page for current venue and entry details. Organizer details →

Trunk or Treat · Saturday, October 24 · 3–6 p.m.
Lake Brownwood State Park · Willow Point Campground
Decorated campsites, ranger activities, and a family photo booth. Food or bedding donations requested in lieu of the entrance fee. Weather dependent. Park notice →

WORTH THE DRIVE
Stephenville Oktoberfest · Saturday, October 24 · 3–9 p.m.
Cross Timbers Legacy Center · 830 South Graham Street
Shopping, food, yard games, and live music. Event listing →

02 / SHOP · CURATED WITH A COLLECTOR’S EYE

What’s worth hunting?

The collector’s pick

Doug Ford Estate Auction · Sunday, October 25 · 1 p.m.
Big Country Auctions · 881 East Highway 80, Abilene

Antique furniture, vintage Fenton glass, Spode china, regional artwork, pocket watches, jewelry, sterling flatware, and nineteenth-century books make this the strongest collectors’ lead in this week’s research. The glass and books alone deserve a careful look through the advertised inventory.

Before you bid: Check preview availability, buyer’s premium, payment rules, and pickup terms directly with the auctioneer. Build those costs into your limit.

Two different kinds of browsing

SonFlower Craft Show & Ministry Fair
Saturday, October 24 · 9 a.m.–3 p.m. · Free admission
First Church of the Nazarene · 2849 Beltway South, Abilene
More than 70 vendors and nonprofits are advertised, with handmade jewelry, embroidery, artwork, gifts, and baked goods. The best fit here is artisan shopping rather than antiques. Show details →

Multiple Estate Auction · Comanche
Saturday, October 24 · 10 a.m.
Hall Auction Company · 13016 Highway 36
A mixed-estate sale with equipment and miscellaneous property. Worth checking for broad auction hunters; the listing does not establish a strong vintage-housewares selection. Inspect the listing →

KEEP IT LOCAL
The Fly-In Fair’s maker shopping and vintage displays offer a Brownwood option if a drive to Abilene is not in this weekend’s plans.

03 / KNOW · BROWNWOOD CHANGES

What’s changing
around home?

Downtown’s next step is bidding

STATUS · BIDDING AUTHORIZED

The change: City Council authorized competitive bidding October 13 for downtown streetscaping, Founders Crossing, and Silo Promenade and Courtyards. Engineering and final design are complete.

Why you care: This moves substantial downtown work closer to construction, with eventual implications for parking, walking routes, and storefront access. Construction contracts have not been awarded.

What’s next: Bid opening is scheduled for November 20, followed by contract recommendations to Council. Official Council agenda →

A fitness court gets funding approval

STATUS · FUNDING APPROVED

The BMDD approved support October 20 for an outdoor fitness court at Cecil Holman Park, according to Brownwood News: up to $100,000 for a standard court or $150,000 for a larger studio version. That could expand public recreation alongside the Bennie Houston Recreation Center renovation. Final design, remaining funding, and a construction schedule still need confirmation.

The shelter remains open

STATUS · TRANSITION ANNOUNCED

Brown County Humane Society’s board plans to stop operating the Corinne T. Smith Animal Center at the end of November. Brownwood is considering options, including direct operation. The future operating agreement, funding, staffing, and continuity of services remain unresolved.

Watch next: A confirmed operating plan before November 30. Background reporting →

On the storefront radar

REPORTED INCOMING TENANT · A children’s boutique plans to occupy the former CrisTea’s storefront downtown, according to an October 20 BMDD update reported by Brownwood News. The name and opening date are unconfirmed.

OPENING ESTIMATE · The same update puts Layne’s Chicken Fingers on track for November at 207 East Commerce Street, the former Popeyes. An exact opening date still needs operator confirmation.

A date to tuck away
